1990

The school is established in response to the increasing number of German children in Taipei. The school begins to operate in September of the school year 1990/91 with the name “Conrad-Celtis-Schule” in two buildings in Tianmu with an English branch and a Kindergarten. Dr Wagner is the first headmaster.

1991

The English branch is transferred to the Taipei British School (TBS). Herr Voget becomes headmaster.

1992

At the beginning of the 1992/93 school year, and together with the Taipei British School and the École Française de Taipei (EFT), the school moves to the shared campus on WenLlin Road. However, the premises are only rented from the local authorities for 3 month periods. The body responsible for the financial cooperation between the three schools is the Taipei European Schools Council (TESCO) with limited administrative functions. Committees are established to fulfil various tasks, however, the functioning of these committees depends on the expertise and initiative of their members. Decision-making processes are time-consuming.

1993

The first joint holiday schedule of the three schools takes effect. The school is offered a plot of land on Yang Ming Shan for the purpose of constructing new school buildings. TESCO sets up a School Building Committee.

1994

Klasse 7 and 8 are formed. The plot of land on Yang Ming Shan may be rented to the European Schools. To this end the schools are required to establish a foundation, which according to local law must own a capital of 10 million NT$. The Swire Group from Hong Kong agrees to provide this sum. Hence the name of the campus: Swire European Campus. The Foundation has 19 members: 6 Europeans with two per school, 9 Taiwanese with three per school, 3 Swire representatives and Dr C.V. Chen as its Chairman. The distribution of the right of representation is in accordance with local legal requirements. Herr Lagler becomes headmaster.

1995

Klasse 9 is formed.

1996

Klasse 10 is formed. A lease and donation agreement is concluded for the Yang Ming Shan site and the buildings to be constructed there. The foundation stone for the Swire European Campus is laid. The Phase 1 building is meant to be a temporary solution. The individual schools contribute a certain percentage to the construction costs, according to the calculated estimate of their future requirements. The concepts in the planning phase still follow national ways of thinking.

1998

The schools move to the campus on Yang Ming Shan. The Primary School, Kindergarten and nursery school of the TBS remain at the campus on WenLin Road.

1999

The schools continue to grow and it becomes increasingly clear that more space is required and that TESCO needs to be restructured. The school instructs a consulting firm to study these issues, who conclude that a CEO needs to be recruited and that the school administration must be centralised and standardised.

2000

In December of the same year, Mr J. Nixon takes up office as CEO. The construction contract for building Phase 2 is signed in early summer 2000. The schools want to continue to expand and their financial contributions for the construction projects are calculated according to their projected requirements for further space. Their way of thinking is still rooted in national categories.

2001

From the beginning of this year, the schools shift their way of thinking from national to European categories. The schools shall remain autonomous up to Klasse 8 and then hand over responsibility for their students to a new Taipei European High School. This High School shall lead the students to the IGCSE and finally to the IB. It is clear that the old model has served its purpose and that the formulae for cost distribution have become obsolete. The school needs to rethink these issues, as well as work out developments following specific needs of the school rather than national requirements. The Foundation must assume a new form in order to conform to all legal and financial requirements. The school year 2001/02 is a transitional period for integrating and restructuring the school administration. Herr Peters becomes headmaster.

2002

The Foundation is established and the Secondary School building is formally opened in September. The schools begin to operate within the new framework. In Yang Ming Shan and on WenLin Road, education and instruction is carried out in the European spirit.

2003

After the major changes during the previous two years, more detailed work is now required. Cooperation between the Sections intensifies and the curricula are followed increasingly by encompassing all Sections. Teachers are assigned to teaching tasks in all Sections, i.e. teaching resources are also made use of as effectively as possible. Two new computer classrooms, the latest experimental aids, the astroturf on the sports grounds and, above all, colleagues who follow strict quality criteria in their teaching make teaching and learning a source of pleasure.

2004

The students are taught foreign languages on a cross-sectional scale in groups of different levels. Based on the European Framework for Languages, a concept for teaching Chinese is developed, which Taiwanese schools also take note of. The Federal Office of Administration (Bundesverwaltungsamt) increases its support for the German School by sending a headmaster from Germany. In August 2004 Herr Sauber takes up office.

2005

The German Section strengthens its position within TES by including German as a foreign language for the first time in the school curriculum. As a sign of support of this policy and in order to prepare for recognition as a German Overseas School, the Federal Office of Administration agrees to send a further qualified teacher from Germany.

2006

The German students from H1 of the High School prepare for the examination of secondary school stage 1 (Sekundar-I-Prüfung) as Klasse 9 of the German Section, while at the same time they continue with the IGCSE programme. Due to continued growth of the school, the need for more teaching space increases, yet there is no more space available on the Yang Ming Shan campus. For this reason, construction begins on the new Primary Campus on WenLin Road.

2007

For the first time, the school applies to participate in the examination of secondary school stage 1 (Sekundar-I-Prüfung). The school is given permission to carry out the examination in the school year 2007/2008, together with the German School Seoul. After the summer holidays, the Kindergarten, nursery school and Primary School move to the new buildings on WenLin Road. Herr Fritzen becomes headmaster.

2008

The first secondary school leaving examination is carried out with great success in cooperation with the German School Seoul. Nursery school is integrated into the Primary School as Flexible School Entrance Stage 0 (Flexible Eingangsstufe 0). The programme “German as a foreign language” (Deutsch als Fremdsprache) for students in the British Section is extended to the High School. The school launches the “Partner School Initiative” (Partnerschulinitiative).

2009

“Buddy Bär goes Taiwan” — Students from the German Section collaborate with students from two partner schools from Fengshan in Kaohsiung County to decorate the first Buddy Bär in Taiwan. Despite the economic crisis, the number of German students at TES reaches a record high. The second very successful secondary school leaving examination is carried out in cooperation with the German School Seoul. A German student achieves the best IB grades at TES.

2010

In March, the Headmaster Conference and further training courses for all German Overseas Schools in East Asia, South East Asia and Australia take place at Taipei European School. The Commissioner for this region from the Central Agency for Schools Abroad also takes part. The Peer Review Team from the German School New Delhi takes a last critical look at the quality of the German School Taipei to prepare the school for the Federal Government and Länder Inspection due in September. In the course of this inspection, the school qualifies to obtain the quality seal “Excellent German Overseas School” (Exzellente Deutsche Auslandsschule).

Having obtained the authorisation to hold exams independently, the school holds Secondary School leaving exams in May for the first time and achieves excellent results. In June, the school receives the quality seal “Excellent German Overseas School” (Exzellente Deutsche Auslandsschule) from the Federal President of Germany.

2012

The Section Council implements the new school programme drawn up by the Steering Committee. Working teams work on concepts for the further development of the school. The revised concepts for teaching are implemented.

2013

During an inspection in March, representatives from the Federal Government and the Länder verify that the school consistently pursues and implements all development objectives. The school acquires the status of a German Overseas School, recognised by the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the German Länder.

2014

   

 

Based on market research from 2013, the school carries out an advertising campaign to tap the potential of new target groups. Many new parents show serious interest in German school education.

2015

The highlight of 2015 was the 25th anniversary of the founding of the German School Taipei. This was celebrated in June with a ceremony and a big school fair, with the support association “Taipei German School Education Association” (TGSEA). But there were also other developments. The increase in the number of children made it possible to set up a third Kindergarten group in February. One result of this development was that, beginning with the school year 2015/16, no classes needed to be combined any more, neither in the primary school nor in the secondary school. The school was also delighted to receive a large number of visitors. The Headmaster Conference of all German Overseas Schools in East Asia, South East Asia and Australia took place here. The Commissioner for this region from the Central Agency for Schools Abroad also participated in this conference. In November, the school hosted the regional training course on the subject of inclusion. At the same time, a Peer Review Team from the German School Kuala Lumpur visited Taipei to take a last critical look at the quality of the German School Taipei to prepare it for the Federal Government and Länder Inspection due in November 2016.
